Email Access Information

Quick Reference Settings

• Incoming Mail Server: physics-mail.ucsd.edu
  • using SSL on port 993 for IMAP or port 995 for POP is required


• Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.ucsd.edu
  • using SSL on port 465 is advised but not required when on-campus
  • using SSL on port 465 and authentication using your UCSD Active Directory (AD) Account is required when off-campus

You can access your email via any of the following methods:

• WebMail - compose and manage email by going to http://physics-mail.ucsd.edu from any web browser

• Alpine (Pine), a text-based email client - using SSH, log in to physics-shell.ucsd.edu and run “alpine” from the command line

• Any email client that supports secure connections (SSL) - see below for setup instructions for common email clients

When configuring your email client, you may choose to use either the IMAP or POP protocols.  We recommend IMAP so that you can store your own custom mail folders on the mail server.  However, you may use POP if you prefer. Click here for for more information on IMAP vs POP.

If you will be setting up a mail client for use off campus (on your home computer, for example) and you are using a non-UCSD Internet Service Provider (ISP) it is advised to use your ISP's own outgoing mail server instead of the UCSD outgoing mail server. Please refer to your ISP's documentation and/or here for more information.
